During the past few years the group of 13 photographers and 1 musician explored 12 Latvian lighthouses, in order to show cultural, historical and architectural worth and variety of lighthouses by means of art photography and music. Sounds from the inside of lighthouses, sounds around them and stories of workmen were used to create a musical composition.

Each of the historic lighthouses in Latvia is unlike the other. Each has its own age, size, style, and history. Each of them has its face, character, and destiny. Some of them are still inhabited, and the people who live there care for them as if they were their family. The rest are abandoned and forgotten.
The entrance to the territory of most lighthouses is closed to visitors.

The aim of the project is to show cultural and historical worth of lighthouses, while being the heritage of Latvia, and let the audience feel the unique atmosphere of lighthouses.

Unfortunately, lighthouses are gradually losing their value. The recent advances in technology transformed them into lifeless and monotonous warning devices on a metal carcass. They become less architecturally significant and lose their uniqueness. Old lighthouses become gradually forgotten, and die.

115 pictures and 7 tracks are presented within the project.
The published Photo-book can be purchased in bookshops of Riga and at an exhibition.

The exhibition will take place in the Rīgas Mākslas Telpa exhibition hall (Kungu iela 3) from 16.12.2012 till 06.01.2013.
All photoworks and musical compositions will be presented at the exhibition. It will help to to take the audience to the amazing atmosphere that surrounds and fills the lighthouses, and will allow to hear inspector’s stories.

In november 2012 the website www.bakas.lv (www.latvijasbakas.lv; www.latvianlighthouses.com) was launched. It contains all photos and musical compositions. Information about Latvian hauses is also found on the website – location, technical data, brief historical information. All information is avaliable in Lavian, Russian and English.
